Welcome To India

We have been traveling for two days, no showers, no sleep, airplane food, and no change of clothing. We are met at the airport by Pastor Sharath Bhushan his son and The last leg of our journey to Razole, India is a car ride two hours long from Hyderabad. We are running on fumes, but the sights and sounds of the journey (or it could be the roads and the constant horn blaring) keep me wide awake.

The roads that started with tarmac soon became roads that had once known tarmac. A little rough around the edges, and the middle for that matter. We wind our way through towns and villages until we enter Razole and come to our base camp, which is the home of the pastor, the children’s home and the church. We are greeted by children coming from the home and a large Pepsi truck filled with supplies that had been donated to the mission by Pepsi. What a welcome sight Aquafina!!!

No sooner had we got out of the cars a man was presented to Dr Vega with chest pains, a chest trauma and trouble breathing, after a quick examination we had to take him to a hospital for a better examination.

As we enter the hospital there is a radiologist who conducts an ultrasound of the patient’s heart and chest all for $9. It is decided that aspiration and tests were needed.

Before that could happen, the Dr asked Dr Vega and me to go to his house and meet his family. We are taken upstairs and given Cola, and watermelon and presented with two photo albums of their 12 year old daughter. Although it is a rather strange moment, it is a great honor to meet with them.

Now to work, back downstairs and to a small room with and old lamp and many people. The patient is sat don and prepped for the aspiration, he doesn’t seem to easy at this point and he grabs onto Dr Vega’s hand and kisses it in the hope of relief. The spiration is quick and successful, an I wait outside. In a moment I am handed a syringe, and asked to get on the back of a scooter and go to the lab 5 minutes away. The horns are blaring and the lights are bright, and the confusion of the traffic is overwhelming. We get there in one piece and hand off the sample and we head back to camp.

Day one done. How was your day?
